I caught up with top LA photographer Sergio Garcia to learn about how to capture a perfect portrait for dating apps & Los Angeles’ local dating scene.

[Blaine] What's the secret to taking a great dating app photo?

[Sergio] There are a few “secrets” that I think will make anyone’s online dating photoshoot a success.

First, go into it expecting the unexpected! Don’t try to “plan” every little thing. Just have fun and go with the flow!

You and your photographer should improvise along the way; this is typically how some of the best dating photos are captured.

Secondly, don’t question the photographer! For example, if we make a suggestion for a certain pose or action that we want you to take, don’t ask if it’ll look good.

Again, go with the flow! If we are asking you to pose in a certain way it’s because we are looking at the entire picture via the camera. We “see” something that more than likely will look amazing. Worst case scenario, it doesn’t work and you don’t use that specific group of photos.

Lastly, arrive to the session with a good attitude. If you arrive not wanting to be there or stressed, it will show in your photos.

[Blaine] Have you seen an increase in demand for dating app photos?

[Sergio] Yes! And surprisingly a majority of our dating photo clients have been men.

[Blaine] What are some of your favorite places to shoot in LA?

[Sergio] I love to shoot dating photos in downtown LA if someone wants a more urban and grungy look.

We also love heading to Santa Monica and shooting dating photos on the beach or at Palisades Park, it gives a very soft and inviting warmth to the photos.

For those wanting dating photos that look a bit more upscale, we also enjoy shooting on Rodeo Drive.

[Blaine] What are some of your favorite LA date spots?

[Sergio] For those wanting an amazing view of the city, I recommend going to Spire 73 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. It’s an open air bar on the 73 floor and the views are stunning (go during sunset).

[Blaine] What got you into photography? What do you like most about it?

[Sergio] My entire life has revolved around the arts. from music, painting and sculpting, I’ve done a bit of everything.

Photography was another avenue I decided to explore and it ended up becoming my career (over 14 years now!).

One of the things I like most about photography is capturing creative photos of whoever the subject may be. from celebrities, models or dating photos!

No two shoots are the same, so it’s always fun to see what type of photos we capture.
